PUB:  2003

FORMAT:  cloth

PRICE:   $64.95Cdn (in Canada) / $64.95US (outside Canada) cloth

This volume records a conversation between scholars working in Ancient Greek Ethics and Contemporary moral philosophers. Ancient and modern concepts of well-being are standardly constrasted thus.  The foundational principle of Greek moral theory is that happiness is desired by all human beings as the ultimate end of life, and the life of virture is the happy life.  Modern ethical theory focuses on well-being also, but as decided by individuals' subjective self-appraisals, not by an objective concept of the ethically good.  These essays interrogate this standard contrast, both as an accurate reading of ancient ethical theory, and as valid representations of human well-being itself as a contested concept.

Science and philosophy in the Hellenistic and early Roman periods constitute a set of increasingly specialized but inter-dependant subjects and methods.  Scholars defined themselves in relation to the growing shadows of their authorities and traditions.  Disciplines that sought to offer knowledge of the kind we now label scientific were continually reinvented and redefined in terms of their relationships both with their past and with other disciplines of their present.  Today, the modern category of science informs, and is informed by, the ways in which we understand its history.  The re-inventions charted in this volume shed light on our present as well as on our past.

Scholars nowadays are reevaluating the importance of the religious dimension of Socrates’ philosophy.  To contemporary readers, perhaps the most alien aspect of Socratic religion is his daimonion.  Plato and Xenophon portray Socrates as a paragon of reason, whose religious views they also regard as models of rationality.  Whatever the exact nature of the daimonion, they never give the impression that Socrates’ reactions to it were foolish or irrational.

”The papers brought together in the present volume deal with instances in which philosophy does in fact have a notable function in the understanding of moral questions.  They are meant to illustrate the way philosophical issues enter into the discussion of strictly moral problems.  The philosophical side remains strictly philosophical.  It is not what makes the decision to perform or not to perform the moral action.  Yet it has its role to play in human conduct.“
